Small outline tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits cross-legged on a sofa in striped top and black dungarees, holding a black and white striped mug with both hands. A small black outline of a tooth-like shape sits on the inner wrist and forearm, drawn in a thin, even line with no shading. The palette is monochrome apart from the neutral sofa and clothing, and the framing is a soft, bright top-down shot that keeps the face out of view.

You are the only one on the Sallow Flats road who can paint a straight line, so when Mrs Fenwick wants her sign replaced, it falls to you. The old one has faded to a ghost: a giant grinning molar on a pole, half its enamel bleached off by thirty summers of sun. The new board is plywood from the lumber yard in Tolliver, and you spend two mornings sketching it in pencil, rounding the crown and letting the roots fork like dry creek beds.

Mrs Fenwick sits on her step with a striped enamel mug of black coffee while you work. She says the tooth belonged to her husband, pulled by a drunk dentist in a motel bathroom in 1961, and she has never once managed to make it look like anything but a joke. You tell her outlines are kinder than paint. A line doesn't pretend to be anything else. You trace the edge in one steady stroke, the way a truck holds a highway on cruise control, and the thing stands up on the board as though it had always been there.
On the third day a dust storm rolls in off the flats and takes the sign pole clean out of the ground. You find the board half a mile off, face down in a dry wash, and the tooth is still whole. Nothing else survived. Mrs Fenwick says that is the most honest thing the desert has ever done for her.
