The flour had been left out again, and Mabel Crane knew before she lifted the sacking that the mice had been at it. She swore under her breath, the way her mother had, and fetched the sieve from its hook by the oven door while the bells at Scarth were still asleep.

Everyone on the moor knew the bakery at the three-lane crossing. Its oven was lit before any other in the valley, and each morning the baker shaped one loaf with three corners, set it on the sill facing the crossing, and left it there until the light came. Travellers coming down off the fells in the dark would see the pale loaf and turn their feet towards the warmth, and nobody who ate from that sill ever lost the road again. That was the tale, and Mabel had kept it going for eleven winters without once asking whether it was true.

The hard frost came early that year and cracked the bottom of the oven. Mabel had dough enough for one loaf, and it was then that Tam Rennie came banging at the back door, his face blue, asking for anything at all because his mother had a fever. She looked at the dough, then at the boy, and she wrapped the three-cornered loaf in a cloth and put it into his arms.

At first light she went out to the sill with a heavy heart and found it bare. In the frost there were three lines of small boot prints, one from each road, all meeting at the stone where the loaf had sat, and then all going on together down the track towards Scarth. Mabel stood with flour on her hands and nothing to set out, and for once she did not reach for the sieve.
