Sun and crescent moon tattoos on two ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, each showing a small tattoo on the ankle. The left ankle carries a bold black outlined sun with a dotted centre and radiating rays, while the right ankle has a delicate single-line crescent moon. Both designs are in black ink on skin, set against pale pavement with white and black sneakers and dark trousers.

Mrs Tolladay kept the sun in the scullery copper, under a lid she tapped twice every morning before the milk came. It rose out of the steam like a cross loaf, all rays and no manners, and she sent it over the harbour wall before the lodgers were up to complain about the glare on their eggs.

The man who came off the night boat in October had a single case, a silver watch with no hands, and a request that surprised her. He wanted the room over the harbour, and he wanted, once a day, to see the sun before it was sent away. Mrs Tolladay had never let anyone near the copper. She told him so, and he thanked her as if she had given him something, and went up the cliff path with his hat in his hand.
Every evening after that he came back and left a curl of silver on the scullery sill, thin as a fishbone, for her to find. She put them in a saucer. Each morning there was less of him in the saucer, and each evening he looked more like a paring of a fingernail when he tipped his hat at the door.
In the last week of the month she lifted the copper lid for him at dusk, just for a breath, and the sun rolled out and lit the whole bay gold. He stood in it with his face turned up and said nothing at all. Then Mrs Tolladay put the lid back and tapped it twice. In the morning the sill was bare, the copper was dented where something silver had knocked against it, and the sun came up slow over the wall, as though it had been looking for someone.
