Three stacked triangles on three forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three forearms are shown side by side, each with a small tattoo of three triangles stacked vertically, one above the other. The triangles are drawn in clean thin outlines, with the lower or middle triangle shaded in solid black or dark grey on each arm. The background is dark and the skin is lit softly, so the fine lines and the shaded fills stand out clearly.

The snow had come early over Cwm Hesketh, and the lamp was guttering when Ioan knelt by the sheep fold and told you the marks were only for fair weather. You did not believe him. Three triangles, one above the next, daubed in tar on the gatepost. They had been there when his grandmother brought her goats over the pass with a bad chest and no money, and Ioan said she had insisted on them the way other women insisted on grace before supper.

He showed you the trick of them that spring. The lowest triangle was always filled solid, the two above left hollow. "Hollow for where you have been," he said, "solid for where you must put your foot." When you asked what the middle one meant, he only laughed and said you would know it when you needed it. Old Mair gave each of you a slate with the three shapes scratched into it, and you carried yours in your coat until a frost split it right through the middle triangle.
The fog came off the tops that afternoon like a hand drawn over a lamp. You stopped at the fold with your palm flat on the cold tarred wood, counting the hollow shapes with your fingers, because the eye was no use to you now. Ioan's voice came up from below, then Mair's, then nothing. You understood then that the solid triangle was the one you had to find by touch. You shifted your weight onto it, felt stone give way to turf, and went down the hill one dark mark at a time.
