Small palm tree on a finger
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black palm tree silhouette sits on the side of a finger, with a slender trunk curving up to a crown of fronds. The tattoo is simple and sharply defined, with no shading, and the surrounding skin is light and even. The hand holds a dark beaded necklace against a blurred green background, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The fuel stop at Sayer's Wells had one palm, and on Thursdays I drove the post van past it on the way to the flats. Cedric ran the pump and always had the kettle on by the time I pulled in, because nobody else out there was expecting anything in the mail.

The palm was no taller than my shoulder. Its fronds hung in a thin dark crown that the dust never quite settled on, and its trunk curved as if it were listening to the road. Cedric said his grandmother had carried a date stone across the salt pans in her shoe and planted it where the water came up. I didn't believe him, but I liked him for saying it.
One Thursday the bag came back heavy. A letter had been sitting in the wrong box for eleven years, addressed to a woman who had left the road before I was born, and folded inside it was a frond pressed flat and gone brown at the edges. I carried it to the pump and Cedric held it up to the light the way you'd check a coin.
He didn't say anything for a long while. Then he took the pencil from behind his ear, drew a small palm on the side of his own finger, and handed me the pencil without a word. I drew one on mine. We still meet by the pump on Thursdays, and the letters go out a little later now, because we stop to look at the tree first.
