Small pine tree on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a pine tree sits on the upper arm close to the shoulder. The tree has a tapered crown and a short trunk, with simple edges and no interior linework. The soft, out of focus green foliage behind gives the image a shallow depth of field, and the tattoo is the single sharp point of interest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every April Edwin Dacre and I walked the line from Sallow Gate to the cairn at Hobb's Stile, counting the posts the wind had knocked over. Halfway up the ridge stood one Scots pine, black against the scrub, and it was the only thing on that stretch that never needed mending. Edwin said it had been planted the year the treaty was signed, and that it leaned east because the west wind had been leaning on it for a hundred years.

I believed him until the spring I brought the old survey map up the hill. The line on paper ran a good forty yards past the pine, through a bog where nobody had grazed sheep since the war. Edwin went quiet when I showed him. He sat on a rock with his flask and told me that as a boy he had carried a marker stone down from the ridge at night, shifted it a few yards, and let the pine stand on the side where his family's ewes had always wintered.

I asked him why he was telling me now. He said he was seventy-eight, the stone had sunk into the peat years ago, and the only record left was the tree, and trees do not testify. I wanted to report him. Instead I stood under the branches while the light went copper over the valley and the pine's shadow lay across the bog, belonging to neither side.

When we walked back down, I left the survey map folded in my coat and wrote nothing in the ledger. Some lines are only kept by what grows on them.
