Small teal heart line tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a heart outline with a single line extending diagonally from its base sits on the inner wrist, with the hand raised in a fist. The linework is thin and even, drawn in one teal ink with no shading. The background is a pale grey floor, and the forearm fills the lower half of the frame.

They say the hall at Carrow Bottom had no proper floor, only beaten earth that the dancers swept with their boots until it shone, and that the fiddler, old Tobiah Fenn, would not play a note until the last lamp was lit. The lamps hung from iron hooks along the rafters. Every one was a tin heart, punched with holes, with a length of wire at its base that Tobiah had bent himself so it could be hooked over a beam and left to swing.

The trouble began with a girl called Nell Ashdown, who came up from the mill every Saturday and never once asked a man to dance. She stood by the door with her hands in her apron. Tobiah noticed that the lamp nearest her had been hung on a wire that ran straight down from its base and was tied to a nail in the boards, so it could not drift. He thought it looked like a heart that had been kept from floating away. He said nothing about it, but that night he played a slow air with a dropped note in the middle, the one his own mother used to hum over the washing.
When the hall emptied, she was still there. He asked her why the wire was so short. She said it was there to hold the heart to the ground, and that her grandmother had told her so when she was small. Tobiah laughed and said that was no kind of tether, and she said that was exactly why it had lasted. Then she crossed the swept earth towards him, and the two of them danced until the last tin lamp guttered out on its hook.
