Red outline triangle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small equilateral triangle is drawn in a single red outline on the inside of a forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The plain skin and pale fabric behind it keep the focus on the small red mark, which sits near the centre of the frame.

The seating plan had been pinned to the barn door for three weeks before anyone noticed the red triangle. It was drawn in biro, pressed hard, the way you draw when you are trying not to think. It joined three names at table nine: Marnie, Tom and Ruth. Ruth was my cousin, and I had written the names out in careful capitals on the place cards, so the mark was mine, though nobody had asked me to make it.

Gran found me at the trestle tables with the spare cards. "Who's the triangle?" she said, in the voice she keeps for burnt pastry. I told her it was a doodle, the sort of thing a person does when a pen is in her hand and a wedding is going on in the next room. She didn't believe me. She never does. She tapped the corner where Tom's name sat and said, "Three sides, love. You can't seat a wedding on three sides and expect the tablecloth to stay down."
Marnie and Tom were married at two o'clock under the beech tree, and Ruth read the poem with one hand flat on the lectern as if it might blow away. Nothing dramatic happened at table nine beyond the soup going cold and a glass of rosé going over. Afterwards I walked out to the car park with the card in my pocket. Under the lamp I saw I had drawn the lines so neatly that the points almost met, as if the shape had wanted to close and I had stopped it short.
I left the card in the glovebox of my car. I still have the biro. When I draw anything now, I make sure the last line never quite joins the first.
