Small red gem on an ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small faceted gemstone sits on the outer ankle, drawn with angular facets in deep red and pink. The shading is soft, with lighter highlights across the facets giving the stone a glossy, three-dimensional look. The tattoo is centred on a plain grey background, with the ankle and a rolled dark denim cuff visible.

The lobster creel came up heavy on a Tuesday in March, and my sister Ailsa swore the weight was weed until she shook the bait out and something red rolled into the bilge. Father said it was bottle glass, the sort the tide wears into sweetmeats. Ailsa said no bottle ever had eight faces and a light inside it like a struck match, and she was right, though I didn't tell her so.

We took it to Ruairidh Macleod, who cut stones at the back of the Stornoway jeweller's and owed our mother a favour. He held it to the window for a long while without speaking. Then he said garnet, that it had come out of a rock older than the island, and that a stone like that never belonged to whoever found it. It only belonged to whoever could keep it from being sold. He wouldn't say what he meant by that, and he charged us nothing.
The roof needed doing, and Ailsa wanted the money more than the story, so I was the one who carried the stone about in my coat pocket, turning it over at the kirk gate, on the pier, under the blankets when the wind rattled the window. Each time I took it out, the facets threw the lamplight onto the ceiling in small red coins, and I found I could not bear to close my hand on it for a sale.
In May I walked it down to the low tide at the Sgeir and set it on a flat rock where the pools ran clear. The sun came through the water and lit it from underneath, red as a coal at the bottom of a grate. Then a wave slid over it, the weed closed in, and when the water drew back the rock was bare. I was glad, and I did not tell Ailsa.
