Small red heart tattoo on the back of the neck

Neck · Mixed · Photo

A small heart with a solid red fill and a thin dark outline sits on the back of a person's neck, shown from behind. The person has short dark hair and wears a necklace of dark red beads with silver caps. The background is softly out of focus, keeping attention on the small tattoo at the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Annis Pell kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and every guest who came in October was given the back room over the scullery, because it was the warmest and the sea could not reach it. In the autumn of the great blow a fisherman's widow named Hester Coad climbed the steps with one bag and a string of dark red beads wound twice about her wrist. She paid a week in advance, in coins that had been warm in her fist.

She did not come down to breakfast. On the fourth morning Annis carried up the tea and found the window open, the bed made square, and on the sill a small heart cut from red flannel, stitched shut around something hard. Annis knew the flannel. It was a scrap from the lining of her husband's oilskin, the coat that had gone out with the Constance Ann in March and never come home.

She sat on the bed and unpicked the stitches with the kitchen scissors. Inside there was no stone and no bead, only a folded paper with a pencilled line in a hand she had not seen in eleven months: Tell her the room is warm. Below it, in a shakier hand, Hester had written: I found him at the Steps. He was waiting on the wrong side of the tide.

Annis did not write back. She hung the beads on the nail behind the door, where the oilskin had always hung, and every night after that she left the window a crack open, so the sea could come in as far as the sill and no further.
