Brooklyn lettering and crown on wrists
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two clenched fists are raised towards the camera, showing the inner wrists. The left wrist has the word BROOKLYN in bold black block capitals, and the right wrist has a small outlined crown in thin black linework. The ink is black on a light skin tone, set against a dark background with red nail polish visible on the fingers.

Tam, you daft article, I went down to the ink man on Atlantic Avenue like you said and sat for an hour while he argued with me about spelling. Brooklyn, I wanted, in the big square letters they paint on the side of the ferry, and he kept asking whether I was sure it would look right on a wrist. I told him the wrist was the only place I could be sure of reading it every morning while I wait for the 4:10 boat.

Ma wrote that you have a room over a bakery in Flatbush and that the landlady sings hymns through the floor. I hope she is kind. I have not got much else to tell you except that the yard is short of men since the strike and Mr Keogh has me on the gangway with a chalk board and a bell. The crown was your idea, not mine. You said on the boat that a man who gets off in a new country should be treated like royalty for one day, and I thought you were drunk, but I have kept the little crown you drew on the back of the Glasgow ticket. The ink man traced it from that scrap, pressed it down with his thumb, and said nobody in Brooklyn would know what it meant except the two of us.
So that is the arrangement. Whenever you are sick of tenements, look at the crown. Whenever I am sick of the gangway, I look at the word. Neither of us has to write to say where we are, and the bakery smell will stop bothering you once the bread is sold.
Your brother, Eddie
