Sunburst tattoo on upper arm at the beach
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a white ribbed dress sits on a dark blanket on sand, leaning back with one hand resting beside her. A dark sunburst or radiating design is visible on her upper arm, with a small mark near her shoulder, and the ink appears black. The warm sunlight and long shadows fill the frame, with an orange paperback lying on the blanket in the lower centre.

The big top at Hollis and Parr had not seen a full house since the summer the lion died, and the sun painted on its centre pole had faded to the colour of weak tea. Old Maud Parr sat on an upturned crate with the ledger on her knees and counted the coins twice, because once was never enough when there were only nine of them.

Her grandson Tobias wanted to sell the pole. A man from Leeds had offered for the scrap, and the canvas was already patched with feed sacks. "The sun's gone," he said, kicking the sawdust. "Nobody pays to look at a picture."
Maud took him to the wagon where the old tent-mender kept his tools and lifted the rolled canvas of the original flag. Underneath, sewn in gold thread by a woman dead forty years, the sunburst still blazed, its rays long and sharp as knives. "Your great-grandmother stitched this when we were three wagons and a bear," she said. "She said the sun is the only thing that comes back every morning whether you deserve it or not."
They raised the flag that night over the empty benches and lit every lantern they owned. Three children from the village came, then a farrier, then a dozen more, drawn by the glow. Tobias stopped complaining. In the morning he bought paint instead of selling the pole, and began, slowly, to repaint the sun.
