Small script tattoo on the upper back of a woman in a burgundy backless dress and wide-brimmed hat.

Small script word on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, with a small cursive word tattooed between her shoulder blades. The thin, dark grey linework is delicate and the lettering is slightly slanted. The plain black and grey ink stands out against her bare skin, with a blurred outdoor background and a burgundy dress framing the lower part of the image.

Dear Ilse,

The ink reached the harbour office on Tuesday, two jars of it wrapped in wet sailcloth, and Master Pim swore at the carrier for a full quarter hour before he would let me open them. He says the blue from the Vennet mines is the only blue worth the trouble, that soot from the north chimneys goes grey in the first winter and sulks. I have been grinding it in the back room since dawn, my knuckles raw, while he sits by the stove and tells me what the old queen would have made of my lettering. Mostly she would have had it scraped off.

Yesterday a clerk from the palace came down with a sealed box and a list of words the Crown wants kept off the public notices. Most are the usual ones, treason and tithe and the like. But he would not say why the word "return" was on it, nor why it was underlined twice, and when Pim asked him to leave the box, the man laughed and said the kingdom has no use for sentimental ink.

So I have been practising. Every evening I write one word in the slanted hand you taught me, the one that leans into the wind, and I fold the paper small and put it under the floorboard by the window. Tonight it was your name, and then the word that had been on the list, and then, because my hand was steady for once, a third word I will not write in a letter to anyone who might be asked to read it.

Come home before the frost. Pim says the ink will keep until spring, but I will not.

Love, Mira
