Small semicolon tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a hand with its fingers curled, showing a small solid dot and a curved comma-like mark of black ink on the side of one finger. The linework is simple and filled in, with no shading, and the tattoo sits against smooth skin. The soft grey backdrop and even light keep the focus on the small marks.

The Post Office had no code for a semicolon. Clerks spelled everything out, and a full stop was final as a shut door. Ada had learned in her first winter that a message ending in a stop would be read as the end of a thing, so she had taught herself to send the pause another way, two short strokes and a long rest. The old men at the harbour called it her hesitation. It cost nothing extra in the book and it said what she meant.

At twenty past eleven the sounder finally chattered. The Lerwick clerk had tapped out the boat's name, then GONE ROUND THE NESS; EXPECT THEM AT SLACK WATER, and Ada read the line twice before she understood he had kept the pause in.

She copied it onto a slip, pinned it to the board by the door, and lifted her hand from the key. The women at the window didn't move. Neither did she, not for a while, listening to the empty wire and the sea on the stones, waiting for the rest of the sentence to arrive.
