A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the wedding in Pell Hollow, Aunt Marta sat on an upturned bucket by the barn door with her blue tin open on her knees. The groom, Tobias Reeve, came over laughing with his cider jug, and she caught his right hand before he could slap his cousin on the back. "Make a fist," she said. He did it to be funny. She dipped the needle in the lamp oil, pricked the middle finger once, and drew a skull no bigger than a barley grain, two crossed bones beneath it.

"What's that for?" Ada asked, holding her veil back from the lamp. "So he remembers the day he made his vow," Marta said, wiping the finger with a rag. "Every time he lifts this hand to anyone, he'll see the bones and think of the ground he's digging."

The fiddler struck up a reel. Tobias danced with his fist tucked against his chest, and when his cousin asked why he kept it closed all evening, he said he had a splinter he wasn't going to show anyone.

He kept that hand closed through three harvests. When his temper rose, he felt the small ridge of ink against his palm and opened the hand instead. Ada said it was the best wedding gift he ever had, though it came with a needle and a rag.
