Biohazard symbol on a wrist

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised fist and forearm show a small black biohazard symbol tattooed on the inner wrist. The symbol is made of three solid black crescent shapes around a central circle, with clean edges and no visible shading. The background is a soft, out-of-focus mix of green foliage and tree trunks, which keeps attention on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came over the top of Coldharbour the week the hawthorn went white, as it always did, with eleven wagons and a steam organ that played half a tune. Mother Sallow kept the last wagon locked. On its door someone had painted three black crescents around a ring, and beneath them the words KEEP DRY. Nobody in the fair could agree on what was meant to stay dry, so nobody asked.

Tobias Crane, who minded the ferris wheel, was nine that summer and found the key sewn into the hem of Mother Sallow's coat. He let himself in while the others were down at the river. Inside there were no bottles, only a tin box of seeds wrapped in oilcloth, and a card in a child's hand: Plant these where the fair does not stop. Tobias thought it was a trick, so he pocketed one seed to show his sister.

By the time the fair reached the mill town the seed had worked into the seam of his trouser pocket, and he forgot it. When the first frost came early, the wheel would not turn, the organ stuck on its half tune, and the wagons sank in the same field each morning no matter where they were pitched. Mother Sallow went out with a spade, dug where the crescents had been pointing, and found nothing but a black stone, warm as a hand.

She put the stone back in the tin and never opened the wagon again. Tobias grew up to keep the wheel, and every spring he leaves a clean round hole in the gravel where the fair pitches, just wide enough to put a seed in, in case the fair ever needs to stop.
