Small sun outline on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small sun drawn as a simple black circle with short radiating rays and a few scattered dots, placed on the outer thigh of a person wearing a grey knitted skirt and black knee-high socks. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The composition is tightly framed on the thigh with a pale door in the background.

The mist has sat on Hollin Wood since the bell stopped, and you are the only one in Cray's End who still goes in after the wood pigeons. Your boots know the path by its roots. At the third stile you stop, because the light has come down through the hornbeams in a single ring, the exact shape your grandmother used to scratch on the back of the pantry door to mark the days the sun came out.

She taught you the rays: short, quick, never touching the circle. Dots for the things that fall off the sky when it is in a good mood, she said, sparrow feathers, a rain of gold dust. You kneel in the wet bracken and count them. Seven. An eighth is caught on your sleeve and shakes loose when you try to pick it up.

Back at the house the pantry door is gone, sold to a man from the coast with a van. You find the ring again each morning, a little further along the stile, as if it is walking home ahead of you. You stop following it at the old quarry, where the ground drops into a pool so still it holds the sky without a wrinkle.

You lean over and draw it on your palm with a wet thumb: circle, rays, dots. The sun settles in the water exactly where you drew it, and for once the mist has nothing to say about it. You leave the rest to the wood.
