Small sunflower on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small sunflower sits on the inner wrist of a raised hand, with a silver ring on one finger. The bloom has yellow petals with black outlines and a dark brown centre, drawn in a simple, bold style. The plain dark background makes the yellow ink stand out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the hard winter of the herring years, the fishing fleet of Scarrow Bay went out before dawn and came home when the light allowed. Old Mother Teague kept a row of sunflowers along the harbour wall, taller than any man, and the children were told the flowers followed the sun across the sky the way a good wife follows her husband down to the quay.

One November the fog came in thick as wet wool. Seven boats were out past the Gull Rocks and the bell on the wall rang and rang, but the sound would not carry. Tam, Mother Teague's grandson, went out along the wall with a lantern and found the sunflowers bent low, their heads gone heavy and dark with seed. He said they had given up looking for the sun.

"They have not given up," said his grandmother from the doorway. "They are waiting for it to come back and show them where it is." So Tam took his knife to the largest head, the one with the blackest centre and the bright ring of gold around it, and he lashed it to the top of the harbour post with a length of tarred twine. He held the lantern behind it and turned it slowly, so the yellow showed through the murk like a lamp in a window.

The boats came in one by one, steering for that small gold circle in the fog, until the seventh had passed the wall and the bell was no longer needed. In the morning the stalk on the post had bent its head back toward the sea, the way it always did, as if nothing had happened at all. Mother Teague said that was the whole trick of it. A flower keeps its face to whatever is coming home.
