Small swoosh and dot tattoos on fingers
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with a silver band on the index finger shows a small black crescent swoosh tattoo on the middle finger and several clusters of tiny dots on the other fingers. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black with soft grey edges, with no colour. The image is a close crop against a dark background, with the fingers and nails in sharp focus.

The ledger was the one thing my father never let me touch, so naturally it was the first thing I opened the winter the fair went under. Every pitch had its tally in the back, little pencilled dots in clusters of three and four, one for each night the ground had been paid for and each night the rain had won. Mum said they were the only honest accounts in the business.

I found the swoosh on the last page, drawn in ink so the pencil could not smudge it. It was the curve of the Skycoaster's arm the summer before the big wind, the one that took the Hook-a-Duck stall into the Severn. Dad had sketched it the way a man signs for a parcel, quick and certain, and beneath it he had written nothing at all.
The next spring I took the tally wagon out alone, with the ledger on the seat beside me and a flask of stewed tea going cold in the cup holder. At each stop I drew a dot for the night and a swoosh for the wind, and by the time I reached the coast at Weston I had run out of pencil and had to borrow Mum's eyeliner. The sea was the colour of a slate roof. A man in a flat cap came over and asked if I was taking bookings for the Waltzer.
I told him the Waltzer was closed, but he could have the last pitch if he could count. He looked at the ledger, then at my hand, and tapped the dots one finger at a time, one, two, three, as if the sum were already owed to him.
