Small tattoos on arms with slogan t-shirt
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person with long dark hair falling over their face stands against a plain grey wall, wearing a black short-sleeved t-shirt with white block capital lettering reading "MY SPIRIT ANIMAL IS A GOTH TEENAGER". Several small black and grey tattoos are visible on both forearms and upper arms, along with a tattoo on one thigh below a short black skirt. The lighting is soft and even, and the framing is a full-length front view.

Here, at the bus shelter on Harrow Lane, we find the juvenile at her favourite hour, half past four, when the light is already giving up. Observe how she keeps a careful distance from the others waiting. The lads in grey hoodies are loud and bounce on their heels, but she stands still and studies the pavement as though it owes her money. Field researchers have noted that this is how the species listens.

Her habits are well documented. She sleeps through the afternoon with the curtains pinned shut, feeds on cold toast and strong tea, and owns more records than she has ever been seen to play. Her mother leaves a packed lunch on the stairs each morning, and the juvenile carries it upstairs without a word, which the team considers a sign of affection. In her satchel we found a tin of black nail varnish, a biro that has run dry, and a notebook of moths drawn so carefully you can count their wings.
The bus is late, as it always is. A boy with a bike tries to talk to her about a band none of them have heard of, and she answers in one syllable, which he takes as a yes. Then the number 14 comes grinding round the corner, its lights smeared by drizzle, and she climbs aboard without looking back. Nobody has ever seen her lost. She is only early, always, for a place she has not yet decided to be.
When the bus pulls away, the shelter lamp flickers on, and a single moth circles it, pale against the dark. Somewhere up the hill she will already be drawing it, before it has finished coming to the light.
