Small tree tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare foot and lower leg resting on a tiled floor. A small, delicate tree with a thin trunk and sparse branching sits on the outer side of the ankle, drawn in fine black linework with light shading. The image is cropped to show the foot and calf, with two braided bracelets on the ankle and a soft shadow across the floor.

By October the big top had more patches than canvas, and Mr Ansell still counted the takings every night as if the money might grow back by morning. I was the one who swept the sawdust off the wire and the one who noticed the sapling. It had pushed up through the crack where the old elephant pen met the car park, a single stem no thicker than a pencil, with three branches thrown out sideways as if it were trying to keep its balance on the high wire.

Ansell wanted it pulled for the lorry bay. 'It's in the way of the ramp,' he said, tapping his clipboard. I said leave it, and I think he was surprised that I said anything at all. Dorothy Pell, who had flown from the rigging for twenty-two seasons until her knee gave out, came out in her dressing gown and looked at it for a long time. 'Trees don't know the show's finished,' she said, and went back inside. So I measured it every Sunday with a length of baler twine knotted at each inch, and every Sunday the knots ran out a little later than before.
We sold the last lorry in December. The rest of the company drifted off to seaside summers and cousins' spare rooms, and I stayed on in the caravan by the fence because nobody had told me to leave. In March the branches came out in leaf so fine they looked like breath on glass. Ansell drove back up the lane on a Tuesday with no reason to be there, got out and stood at the crack with his hands in his coat pockets. Then he pulled a strip of red ribbon from his pocket, tied it round the stem and pulled the knot tight. 'Something to hold on to,' he said.
