A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gutter lamps on Tanner Row had been out since the gas men struck, so Mabel Crewe went up the hill by the light of her own lantern and the moon, which was no help at all. She had a tin of lamp-black in her apron pocket and a brush she used for painting the names on the almshouse doors, and she was thinking of nothing but her supper when the thing came down off the cathedral roof and landed on the cobbles in front of her like a spilled ink pot.

It was a unicorn, or the shape of one cut from the night. Its body was stretched long in a gallop that never found the ground, its neck thrown back, and its horn pointed down and to the right at the stones as though it meant to write something there. It did not look at her. It ran past her skirts and down into the lane towards the river, and where its hooves touched the wet stone they left soft black smudges that did not wash away.

Mabel had heard the old women say that a unicorn could not be caught, only followed, and that anyone who followed one for a whole night would come back with a mark that would never fade. She had always thought it nonsense, the sort of thing said to keep children off the wharves. She put down the lantern, dipped her brush in the tin, and went after it anyway.

By the time she reached the water it had stopped at the bottom step, and it turned, and it was only a shadow on the slime, a small dark creature with its horn lifted. She pressed her thumb to the wet stone beside it. When she lifted her hand there was a smudge on the back of it, a galloping thing the size of a beetle, and she never did wash it off.
