Small wave tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle rest on pale sand at the edge of shallow turquoise water, with wooded hills across the bay under a cloudy sky. A small, thin black line tattoo of a single wave curls on the ankle bone area. The tattoo is shown in sharp focus and sits against warm skin, with the scene framed in natural daylight.

Dear Nan,

We pulled into Weymouth on Tuesday with the big wheel in pieces on six lorries, and the man from the council has already been twice to tell Dad the ground by the pier is ours for one week and not a minute more. The Wave Swinger is up now, the tall gilt boat that rocks, and Mags says it will never come down straight again if the hinge keeps grinding like a cat in a bucket. I have been on the grease rota since Easter. My hands smell of it.

The thing is, I went down to the sea before the gates opened, while the sky was still the colour of wet pewter. The tide had gone right out and left the sand ribbed like the roof of your mouth, and there was a long bright strip of water lying on top of it, so clear you could read the pebbles through it. A gull walked the edge looking at me as if I owed it money. I thought of the swinger's painted waves, the ones Dad touched up in 1987 with a brush no wider than a pencil, and how they never once looked like the real thing.

Mags caught me there and said the sea would not be wanting me back for another hour at least, which was true. She had her boots in one hand and a pin in her mouth. She took the pin out and said, "You're nobody's son till the rides are running," and handed me a spanner. I still have the spanner. I'll bring it home at Christmas.

Write back soon, and tell Auntie Lou the swinger's hinge is fixed, if she asks. I'm not sure it is.

Love, Tom
