Small outline cat on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a seated cat in profile, drawn as a single continuous outline with a curled tail wrapping around the base. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark blue-black. The cat sits on the outer ankle against a wooden surface, with a plain blurred background.

The rain had been coming down on Saturday Market since seven, and by ten the awnings sagged like wet bread. I was counting out pennies for Mrs Okafor's change when the cat arrived under my trestle table, dry as a biscuit tin, and sat down on the corner of my wooden crate as if she had paid the rent on it.

Nobody owned her. Gerald from the fishmonger's said she came up from the canal steps every morning and went back down at dusk, and that she had once walked off with a whole kipper and been forgiven for it. She never begged. She sat with her back to the crowd, looking out at the rain, her tail curled round her feet like a loose bit of wire someone had tidied away.

I tried to shoo her off on the Tuesday, then the Thursday. Each time she simply got up, stretched, and sat again three feet further along, always facing the same direction, always on the wood. By the third week I had stopped minding. I started bringing a saucer of milk from the café, and the stallholders began calling her the Inspector, because she watched every customer who came past and never once looked impressed.

On the last market day before Christmas the rain stopped for an hour and the sun came through the gap in the roofs. She stood, shook one leg, and walked out between the crates towards the canal. I found the saucer full of rainwater later, and a single damp print of a paw on my ledger, pressed right over the column I had never managed to balance.
