The officer with the grey moustache asked what the marks in the margins were. I told him they were noughts and crosses, the game we played on the back of your bus timetable. He turned the page sideways, as if the lines might spell something, then handed it back without a word.

I have been thinking about the rules. You always took crosses and I always took noughts, and you said that was because you would get the last word. We never finished a game that first summer. The driver kept flicking the cabin lights, and we lost our place in the grid every time, so we started again each Friday. By October the paper had gone soft as cloth from being folded into my coat pocket.

Tomorrow they will stamp my papers on the far side, and I will stand on the platform with my case and a ticket that smells of toner. Your uncle says the trains run late most days, but he also says the track runs straight out across the flat fields, so you can watch a train coming for a long time before it arrives.

When you get this, draw me a grid on the back of something. Put your cross in the corner the way you always do, and I will answer in the middle with a nought. We will both win that game, because neither of us ever bothered to finish it properly.
