Small X and O wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A person in a light grey sweatshirt holds their wrists together, showing a small letter X tattoo on one wrist and a small letter O tattoo on the other. The linework is thin and solid in black ink, with no shading. The soft, neutral background and natural light keep the focus on the two small marks.

Platform four at Thornbury Junction had a waiting room whose radiator ticked like a slow clock, and every winter Nell Carrick and I played noughts and crosses on its steamed-up glass while we waited for the Carlisle connection. She always took the crosses. She said noughts looked like something you'd be handed to hold, and crosses looked like something you'd be asked to settle.

We kept no score, only the marks, which the cleaner wiped away every night at ten. Nell worked the ticket barrier and I was a relief porter who had never once caught a train I meant to catch. She told me about a brother in Leeds who sent postcards with no words on them, just a firm X in the corner. I told her about my father, who could not say sorry out loud, so he drew a small circle at the foot of every letter he wrote to me, as if the round shape could carry what the sentences would not.
In March the line closed for engineering work and the glass stayed clean for a fortnight. On the first morning the trains ran again, I found a single O on the window, drawn low down where someone on the bench would rest a hand, with nothing opposite it.
I didn't wipe it. I sat on the cold bench, took out my pen, and waited for the barrier to clatter open at twenty past seven. When Nell came through and saw the circle, she looked at me and laughed so hard she had to hold on to the radiator. She drew her cross beside it before the 7:42 pulled in.
