Small yellow cartoon bird on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small cartoon bird with a yellow body, orange beak and black outlines stands on thin legs. The bold, simple linework and flat fills give it a clean, playful look. The tattoo sits near the wrist, centred against red fabric with a dark tiled floor below.

Dear Marnie,

The little yellow bird is back on the washing line, the one with the tuft that sticks up as if it has been out in a gale and never combed. I have stopped shooing it. Mr Tennant says it blew off a fishing boat out of Lerwick in March and has decided the ferry shed is its home now. It sits on the clothes prop and watches me peg the sheets with its head tilted, as if it wants to know whether I have ever once got a peg straight.

Father would have liked it. You remember how he talked to the birds on the cliff path, reciting the names of the boats to them. Since the funeral the house has been as quiet as a chapel, and the bird seems to know that. Yesterday it followed me down to the slipway and hopped from mooring rope to mooring rope while I checked the lines, like a deckhand learning the knots.

The ferry comes on Thursday, and I have decided I am going with it. I have not told the council, and I have not told you until now, which is the reason for this letter. I expect the bird will stay behind. It has never once left the shed.

On Thursday morning the engine turned over and the boat began to drift from the pier. The bird came out from the shed, flew three loops over the wheelhouse, and then landed on the stern rail where I was standing. It looked at me for a long moment, the way Father used to when I was about to say something foolish. Then it hopped back to the pier and sat on the prop, watching the water open between us. I am writing this from the mainland now. Tell me what the washing line looks like without it.
