Small yin yang symbol on the lower back
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black yin yang symbol sits on the side of the lower back, just above a turquoise bikini bottom. The left panel shows crisp black ink with clean edges, and the right panel is a close-up in which the same circular mark appears faded and lighter against tanned skin. The composition is simple, with the design centred on bare skin and a plain background.

Dear Tom,

The barrier at the Lesna crossing has been down since Tuesday, so I am writing this on the back of a lorry manifest while Mr Hrubý pretends to check his tyres. You will remember the coin we cut in half on the wall of Grandad's shed, the one with the black side and the white side that never lined up. He always said the two halves had to be turned a little before they would meet, because nothing fits flat on the first try.
Yesterday a lorry came through my lane with a circle painted on its tailgate, black as the ink in my pen. The sun had already worn the white half pale, so it looked like a bruise healing from the edges. I thought of the shed and the dust on the windowsill, and I nearly asked the driver where he had got it. I did not ask. I stamped his papers and wished him a dry road, and he laughed as if I had said something clever.
Now the part I have been putting off. Dad's half is going to the auction house in Brno on Friday. I have told them it is a sentimental thing and they do not care. Send me your half by the Thursday post, and we will see whether the two of them can be turned until they meet across the gate, the way Grandad said.
Love, Eva
