Matching interlocking hearts on three wrists

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three hands are shown turned palm up, each with the same outlined tattoo of interlocking hearts on the wrist. The linework is bold and the hearts are filled with teal, pink, purple and green ink, with some shading inside the loops. The photograph is taken indoors at close range, with the tattoos sitting in the centre of each frame.

The mooring line had frayed at the eye, and Maud Pelham sat on an upturned creel with it across her knees, picking out the bad strands with a marlinspike while the boy watched from the slip. "Three lays," she said, "and no two the same colour. That's how you know they belong together." He asked why she bothered with such an old line. She didn't answer until the last splice was tucked.

The summer the herring failed, her sister Ada, cousin Win and Maud herself had dyed three lengths of cord in the iron pot behind the net loft. Ada's came out teal from a bag of mussel-shell powder, Maud's rose from madder root, and Win's violet from a bottle of blue ink she'd nicked off the chandler. They knotted the cords into three hearts, each looping through the next, and tied them about each other's wrists with a promise to meet at the Tuesday market in the rain, whatever the tide did.

Win came last, soaked to the bone, the green cord she'd added herself gone dark at the edges. She laughed so hard she sat down in a puddle, and none of them unpicked a single knot that day. They only pulled tighter, until the hearts would have needed a sailor's blade to cut.

The boy asked again who the line was for. Maud ran her thumb over the new eye, where the three hearts now sat worked into tarred hemp. "Whoever comes back up the slip," she said, "and needs something to hold."
