A hand is held up towards the camera with the fingers curled, showing a tiny cross tattoo on the inner wrist below the thumb. His granddaughter Nessa went down to the slipway with a pot of violet dye that her mother used for the church linen, and a brush made from a gull's wing feather. The tide was turning. She stood on the bottom step where the weed lay slick and painted a small cross on the stone wall, then another beside it, and another, until the whole length of the wall was marked like the rim of a bell. The dye ran into the cracks and dried the colour of a bruised plum.

Out in the murk, a bell rang twice from the crab boat, then stopped. Nessa did not wait to be thanked. She walked home with her skirts wet to the knee and her fingers stained, and she slept soundly for the first time that week.

In the morning the fog had lifted off the bay like a sheet pulled from a bed, and Brannock was rowing in with three pots of crabs and a tale about a small light that had shown him the channel. Every mark on the wall was still there, bright as the day it was painted, and nobody in Porthlynn ever scrubbed them away.
