Smiling peas in a pod on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A pea pod with three round green peas, each with closed eyes, smiling mouths and pink cheeks, sits at the centre of the design. Heart-shaped leaves and curling black-outlined vines frame the pod, with soft shading on the peas and pod. Bold green and red ink dominates the composition against the skin tone, which fills the frame.

Rain had been coming down on Harrow Street market since six, drumming on the awning above Dev Ashworth's stall until the canvas bellied like a wet sail. By noon the customers had thinned to a few determined umbrellas, and Dev was counting punnets of runner beans for the third time when he noticed the crate at the back. Someone had left a pea pod there the previous Saturday, a fat green thing with a curl of tendril still on its stalk, and nobody had wanted it. It had been sulking in the damp ever since.

Except it was not sulking, he realised, leaning closer. Three peas had split their seams overnight and were wedged together in the hollow, round and glossy, each with its eyes shut tight and a smile that looked suspiciously like contentment. One had pink cheeks, as if the rain had flattered it. Dev, who had sold cabbages for thirty-one years and never once been good at small talk with produce, said, "Well, you lot don't look like you're going anywhere."

At twenty to one a woman in a yellow mac ducked under the awning, shaking her hair like a spaniel. She was after something for soup, she said, and nothing in his crates was quite right. Her eyes landed on the pod and she laughed out loud. "Look at them," she said. "They've had a lovely time in the wet." Dev sold her the pod for a pound and threw in a sprig of mint for the three of them to share.

When the rain finally thinned, Dev watched her walk off down the street with the pod tucked under one arm like a parcel. The empty crate sat dry for the first time all day. Dev found, to his own surprise, that he was smiling too.
