Colour sleeve tattoo of Sonic the Hedgehog with red spotted super mushrooms, a starry blue sky and a Triforce on the forearm and upper arm.

Sonic the Hedgehog sleeve on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo runs from the wrist up past the elbow, showing Sonic the Hedgehog running across green hills beside gold rings. Red and white spotted mushrooms and stars sit in a blue sky above him, and a black and blue Triforce sits near the wrist. The painted shading is soft and cartoon-like, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a blurred office background.

The lift in Carrick House had been broken since Tuesday, so the couriers took the stairs, and the hedgehog took them two at a time. Nobody at the Redfern Street depot knew where he had come from. He arrived on a Thursday with a bag of gold rings slung over one shoulder and a dented red and white mushroom pinned to his helmet like a badge, and he asked, very politely, whether anyone needed a parcel taking somewhere fast.

Maud, who ran the dispatch board, gave him the worst route in the borough: a cake for a retirement party in Tollgate, eleven flights up a block with no working buzzer. He was back in four minutes, grinning, with the cake intact and a ring glinting on each wrist. 'Hills are easier than stairs,' he said, which made no sense, and nobody argued, because the cake was perfect.

Then the rain came, the depot lights failed, and the board filled with orders nobody could read. The hedgehog stood in the doorway looking up at the grey sky the way a boy looks at a kite that has snagged on a chimney. Maud saw him counting under his breath, one, two, three, the way you count before a jump, and she understood he was not going to run anywhere that night.

He pressed three gold rings into her palm, arranged in a little triangle. 'For the next one who gets lost,' he said. Then he was out in the wet, small and blue and quick, and the mushrooms stuck to the board began to glow, one by one, until the whole depot was lit.
