Soul Eater face and crossed scythes on thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a yellow, cartoon-style face with angry grey eyes and a zigzag mouth, set in the centre of two crossed scythes with red and dark grey blades and ornate handles. The design uses bold black outlines and flat colour fills with light shading. The composition is symmetrical and sits across the outer thigh, with a blue garment and a hand visible at the edges of the frame.

His name is Dez, and he runs the petrol pump and the tyre bay out of a tin shed that smells of hot oil and dust. Behind the counter there is a wall of old hand-painted signs, faded to the colour of weak tea. The one he showed me first has a grinning yellow face with furious grey eyes and a zigzag mouth, set between two scythes crossed behind it, their blades red and dark as dried brick. His father painted it in 1979 for the bend above town, because he drove a tanker up that road for twenty years and swore the drivers came down it like they were late for a funeral. Dez says the sign did its job. Nobody has ever taken that bend fast.
The county wants it down by the end of the month, so yesterday we unscrewed it from the post together, the paint flaking onto my palms like yellow pollen. I asked him why he was keeping it when the county had signed the order. He wiped his hands on his overalls and said a sign is only a promise that somebody was looking out for you once. Then he wrapped the scythe panel in a feed sack and wrote my address on it in marker.
It goes on the bus tomorrow, so keep the spare room clear for a heavy parcel. I will be home before it arrives, I hope. Love, Nell
