Batman-themed rubber duck on a shoulder
Traditional · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A rubber duck wearing a Batman cowl with pointed ears and a bat symbol on its body, shown in a three-quarter view facing left. The bold black outlines and flat yellow, orange and black fills give it a cartoon look, with some soft shading on the wing and tail. It sits on the upper back and shoulder of a person wearing a striped tank top, with the design centred in the frame.

Mrs Okafor's ground-floor flat had a bath with a crack down the middle, and every Thursday Dev and I got to fill it with whatever we'd rescued from the skip behind Haverton House. That week it was a rubber duck, the yellow gone grey at the beak, one wing chewed by someone's dog. Dev said it was rubbish. I said it was a hero in disguise, because I'd been reading the comics Mr Pell left in the lift.

We named him Bruce, mostly to annoy Dev's older brother, who thought Batman was for babies. Bruce got a cape cut from a bin liner and a cowl made from the black lid of a shampoo bottle, with two ears bent up by a hairclip. Dev drew the bat on his side in biro, then went over it three times because the first attempt looked like a moth that had given up.
The trouble started when Dev's brother dared us to float Bruce in the paddling pool in the car park, the one that smelled of fried chicken. He sank for a second, then bobbed up with his bent ears pointing at the sky, looking, Dev said, furious about it. A woman with a pushchair laughed so hard she had to sit on the bench.
Mr Pell came down that evening with a tin of Quality Street and asked to see the hero. He turned Bruce over in his big careful hands, pressed the biro bat with his thumb, and said the wing needed more black, otherwise nobody would know who he was supposed to be. Dev still keeps Bruce on his windowsill. The bat has faded now, but the duck still sits up straight whenever anyone walks past.
