Space scene in a circle on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A circular tattoo on the calf shows a night sky with a crescent moon, ringed planets, a flying saucer with rays, and small stars. The lower half is a hatched and stippled landscape with rounded forms, and the sky is filled in solid black. Most of the design is black and grey, with a teal wash in the upper left section.

Nobody in Carnmoor believed Alf Penrose had seen a saucer over the reservoir, least of all the vicar, but the telescope in the chapel tower had been bought with his pension, so the village kept his sightings on the noticeboard beside the bread rota. The latest card said only: Thursday, half eleven, three rays, one hum, no lights on the ferry.

Maud Trewin read it twice while the kettle ticked on the stove behind the post office counter. She had taken over from her father in March and was still learning which envelopes could be trusted to reach Bristol. In a drawer under the stamps she had found his notebook of the sky, columns of moon phases in pencil. The last entry was for a November night, a crescent low over the quarry, and beneath it a single line: Ask the lady at the mill about the rings.
The lady at the mill was ninety-one and kept hens and a biscuit tin of old glass plates. She laid three of them on the kitchen table under the lamp. On each, a ringed planet had been scratched in pale ink, and beside every one sat a little saucer with its rays fanned out like the spokes of a cart wheel. 'Your father came to me with the same question,' she said. 'I told him the sky is only a field, and fields get ploughed.'
Maud carried the plates home wrapped in a tea towel. That night she set the telescope up on the chapel roof, and when the crescent rose over the water she saw, faint as a thumbprint on glass, something turning its slow light across the reservoir. She wrote the time in her father's book, underlined it twice, and went down to put the kettle on.
