Spaced capital lettering down the spine
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a bare back with the letters P, R, O, M, E and Q, U, E, E, N set in a single vertical column along the spine, reading PROME QUEEN. The letters are bold, upright serif capitals with evenly spaced gaps between them. The ink is solid black with slight softening at the edges, and the warm skin tones and dark clothing at the top and bottom frame the text centrally.

Dear Mr Pardoe,

The board for the Esplanade hall went up on Tuesday, though not the way you drew it. Your plank came up four inches short at the foot, so I had to stop the word where the wood stopped. What's left reads PROME, then a gap, then QUEEN, the capitals stood one above another down the left doorpost where the wind off the bay can't get at them.
I cut the spacing by eye with a pair of dividers and a length of chalk line, and the gaps came out wider than I'd have liked. Mrs Quill came down to watch me finish the last E and asked why the carnival board had been cut short like a telegram. I told her the sea had taken the rest of the word, which she didn't find funny, though her husband did, and he has been calling the hall the Prome ever since.
She stood there a long while with her hands in her cardigan pockets, reading it top to bottom. Then she said the town had always been short of room for its good names and it was no bad thing if the boards made people stop and work out what was meant. She paid me in cash and asked me to leave the lettering as it was.
I left the tins on the step, and the paint was still tacky when the first gulls came down to look at it. Yours faithfully, Tom Hesketh, sign writer.
