Grey cat with blue eyes on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a grey cat with bright blue eyes lying on its side, with its head tilted towards the viewer. It rests on a purple and lilac checked blanket, and a soft blue wash sits behind the cat's back. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine whiskers and graded tones in the fur, and the composition fills the curve of the limb.

Nobody had mentioned the cat. The woman at the hire desk in Barstow slid the keys across and said the last driver had left a grey Siamese in the back, and would I mind dropping her at the rescue in Needles. I said I would not mind. Then I saw the blanket folded under her, purple and lilac in squares like a picnic cloth, and understood that the cat had already settled the arrangement.

For the first hundred miles she stayed flat on it, head tipped over the edge of the seat, watching me with eyes so blue they looked lit from behind. Every time I glanced in the mirror, they were there. The road ran straight through creosote and heat shimmer, past a water tower with its name half gone, past a single pickup coming the other way with a dog standing in the bed like a figurehead. Nothing else moved. I talked to her about nothing, the way you talk to someone you have not agreed to be responsible for.

Near Amboy I pulled into a station with one working pump. When I came back from the toilet, the back seat was empty. I found her on the forecourt, sitting square on the purple blanket I had dragged out to shade the bonnet, looking up at me as though I were the one who had wandered off. I picked her up and she allowed it, her chin tucked against my wrist.

I kept the blanket on the passenger seat after that, and the cat kept to it, and somewhere past Amboy I stopped checking the mileage.
