Sphynx cat tattoo on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A hairless sphynx cat sits upright with its tail curled beside its feet, drawn in thin black outlines with wavy contour lines across the body. The large round eyes are left as pale open circles, and fine stippling adds texture to the ears and shadows. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the length of the leg against a pale, textured wall.

The rain had found its way under the tarpaulin again by half past seven, so I shifted the box of brass door knobs onto an upturned crate and gave the cat the dry corner, where the lamp from the next stall threw a warm square onto the cobbles. Nobody on Thornbury Row had ever seen her eat. She sat with her tail wrapped round her feet like a length of old rope and watched the bus shelter across the road with those pale, open eyes, as if the glass held nothing but a queue of people who hadn't yet decided to be real.

Mr Okafor from the fruit stall swore she was blind. He said so every Saturday, and every Saturday she turned her head a fraction and looked at him until he went back to his bananas. I believed him less each week. She knew when the till drawer would stick. She knew which of the regulars were lying about their wives.

The man who came in the rain on the last Sunday in October wore a good coat and asked for a clock with no hands. I told him I had only the ordinary kind. He stood a long time in front of the cat, and she did not blink once, and when he finally turned to go she lifted one paw from her feet and set it down again on the cobbles, very neatly, the way you might tick off a name.

I never saw him again. The next week the stall beside mine sold up, and the lamp went with it, and the cat stayed on her crate in the cold until I bought her a blanket, which she ignored, as she ignores everything that is not already hers.
