The moose came down out of the birch wood the week the frost broke, and it walked straight past the cabbages as if it had an appointment at the far hedge. It stopped by the water butt and drank for a long time. Her grandson Teddy, who was nine and had been told not to climb the gate, climbed the gate anyway and said it looked like a coat hanger someone had bent into a beast. The moose lifted its head, antlers catching the low light, and looked at him with the patience of something that had walked a long way and did not intend to walk any further than it must.

Ottilie did not chase it off. Her mother had told her that a visitor who came to a garden wanted only to be let through, so she opened the far gate and left the lettuces alone. The moose went through, sure-footed on the wet path, and at the hedge it turned its head once, as if to check she was still there, and then it was gone into the nettles.

Teddy said the moose had gone home. Ottilie said it had only gone on. That autumn she planted a row of birch saplings along the hedge, and every spring after, the leaves came out before anything else.
