Star tattoos on the neck under UV light
Neck · Colour · Photo
A close side view of a neck and ear with a cluster of star tattoos of varying sizes trailing down towards the shoulder. Under ultraviolet light the stars glow bright blue, with some drawn as outlines and others filled with softer shading. The dark background and the lamp at the top left frame the stars against the skin.

The night boat from Rotterdam always lands after two, and by then I have stopped trusting anything that looks neat. I hold the ultraviolet lamp low over each passport because that is where forgers slip. Paper that looks honest under the strip light goes flat and grey under the tube, and then the real marks wake up, hairline threads and tiny printed stars that only glow when they are genuine.

The man at my booth was called Teodor Ilyin, and his visa had five stars along its margin. Under my lamp they burned a clean electric blue, one large, one small, three more in a loose trail down toward the stamp box, as if someone had dropped them in order. I asked him where the design came from. He said his sister had drawn it at the print works in Ruse, on the last shift before the presses were sold for scrap, and that she had hidden a constellation in every sheet she could reach.
I wanted to believe him, and I wanted the lamp to lie. Instead I counted the stars twice. The trail ran straight at the line of harbour buoys blinking in the window behind him, so that for a moment the sky and the paper agreed. My grandmother used to say stars only show when you stop staring straight at them. I looked away from the page, and the glow held on the back of my eyes.
I stamped the visa and slid it back under the glass. Teodor thanked me and walked out toward the waiting coaches, and I switched the lamp off. The stars faded slowly on the counter, the largest one last, like a light going out at the far end of a long street.
