You are kneeling by the linen hatch on Ward Seven at half past three, the UV torch held low, and the only light in the sluice room is the blue glow and the faint hum of the drier. Sister Agnes Penhale has asked you to check the hand-wash sinks for missed patches, and you have found plenty: smudged arcs, a dot here and there where someone rushed.

The mark on the sluice door is different. It is not a smear. It is a long curl that starts at the handle and opens into tight spirals, the way a fern unfolds, with a trail of dots climbing the frame like someone counting steps. Somebody has drawn it on purpose, in gel meant for nothing but germs, and then wiped the sink clean around it so it would survive every audit. You think of Agnes, who never sits down on nights, and who once told you the scroll on the back of her hand was a shop mistake she had never got around to covering.

You reach for the scrubber, then stop. The dots lead up past the frame to the high cupboard where the spare drapes are kept, and they go on glowing after the torch has moved on, as if the gel has soaked into something older than the paint. You switch the lamp off. In the dark the curl hangs on the door, bright as a signature, and you fill in the audit sheet with a blank where the bad sink should go, and leave the mark for whoever comes after you.
