Three jellyfish tattoos in a row on a limb, glowing bright blue under ultraviolet light against a dark background.

Three jellyfish tattoos under UV light

Other · Colour · Photo

Three jellyfish tattoos sit side by side, each with a domed bell, frilled edge and long trailing tentacles drawn in fine, wavy lines. The ink glows bright blue under ultraviolet light, so the linework and tentacle detail stand out sharply against the dark surroundings. The three figures are evenly spaced and run vertically across the skin, filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Maud kept the lamp at Carrick Hollin, where the sea had eaten the south wall of the keep and left the chapel standing on its own. Every spring the fishing boats from Skerry Cove came round the point with their nets, and every spring the lamp was lit for them, though nobody had paid for oil in forty years.

The story the village told was that a miller's daughter had gone down to the tidal pools below the chapel on a night with no moon, carrying a candle to find her brother's boat. The candle went out in the spray. She did not come back up the steps. In the morning there were only jellyfish left stranded in the rock pools, bells as wide as a plate, trailing threads that glowed wherever they touched the stone.

Maud did not believe it until the summer she was twelve and her father's hands were too swollen to haul. She went down alone with a cracked jar and a splinter of tallow. The water under the chapel was black, but when she lowered her arm the threads lit up blue along her skin, every fine wave of them, as if someone had drawn them there in ink.

She lit no lamp that night. She sat on the wet step and let the jellies drift against her wrist, counting the tentacles as they brightened and dimmed, until the tide turned and the chapel bell began to ring for nobody. She climbed up with the jar empty. The boats came in the next morning, and the lamp on the chapel roof stayed unlit, because the light was already coming up from the water.
