You are sweeping sawdust from the floor of the Sundowner Ballroom when the band tunes up without you. Mirrin, the bass player, hums a note through his teeth and the ceiling fans stutter in time. At the back wall, Gorvak sits in his copper tub of warm brine, his great slick belly resting on the rim, and blows smoke at the rafters. He has paid for Saturday night in advance. He has paid for you to dance with his niece too, and he expects you to be grateful.

Lenna Haskar runs the ticket booth with her hair pinned up in two tight coils, and she is the only person on Kessel Reach who has ever told her uncle no. She slides a stamped card across the counter. "Three dances," she says. "Then you go home, and you don't come back this season." You take the card. Outside, a scavenger in a brown hooded cloak is dragging a cart of salvaged cable past the doors, and two yellow eyes follow you all the way down the steps.

Oob, the furred tracker from the timber camps, keeps his spear propped against the bar and pours drinks with his small clever hands. He hops onto a stool, hands you a cup of something sour, and tells you the scavenger buys every dead lamp in the district and never once sells a working one. Then the first dance begins, and Lenna's hand is cold and certain in yours. She counts the steps under her breath and never looks at her uncle.

By the third dance the lamps have been turned down to save power, and the only bright things left in the hall are the scavenger's eyes, glowing at the door. Lenna doesn't let go when the music stops. Behind you, the copper tub slops over the rim, and for the first time all night, Gorvak stops smiling.
