A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your hands are still tarred from the Morwenna's net when Dilys shoves a mug of stewed tea at you and nods towards the slipway. Out past the breakwater the fleet is coming in, six boats strung out like beads on a wet string, their sails the colour of weak milk in the grey light. You know which two are hers without looking. Her father painted a face on each of the Teal's sails the spring before the sea took him, one profile turned to the other, and every time the boats come up the channel with the wind behind them, those painted faces lean in until the peaks almost touch.

Last autumn you rowed out with Tomas, who laughed at the old story and said the faces had never got closer than a hand's width in forty years. He reckoned the peaks only met when the wind dropped and the boats lost their way, drifting until the sails slapped together like applause. You told him that was the most romantic thing he'd ever said, and he threw a gutted mackerel at your head, and you both laughed until the gulls came down to see what the fuss was about.

This evening the wind has backed round to the east and the Teal is late. You stand on the wall counting sails with the cold climbing your shins, one, two, five, and then the sixth comes round the point with its foresail reefed low. As it nears the harbour mouth the boat turns its bow towards the slip, the mainsail swings across, and the two faces slide together at the top of the triangle, close enough that you can make out the curve of each nose. You hold out the mooring rope before anyone shouts for it.
