Stethoscope heartbeat and nurse tattoo
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black fine line design reads left to right: a stethoscope, a heartbeat trace with three spikes, the word nurse in cursive script, and a heart formed by the tail of a stethoscope. The linework is thin and even, in one dark ink with no shading. The design sits centred on a pale stretch of skin, with a dark strap or bag edge visible at the top and bottom of the frame.

Dolores had Daniel's wrist between two fingers before the speeches had even begun, her eyes on the clock above the marquee bar. 'Ninety-two,' she announced, delighted, as though he had passed an exam. 'You'll live, son. Your nerves are a sight healthier than your father's were on his wedding day.'

Her stethoscope hung around her neck over a navy dress, the tubing coiled like something she had never quite taken off after thirty years on the cardiac ward. I had worked nights beside her long enough to know she would sooner lose her handbag than that. She fished a biro from her clutch and drew on the back of a paper napkin: a flat line, three sharp peaks, then a loop curling back on itself. 'Forty-one years ago, bed four,' she said. 'Chest pain, a silly man in pyjamas who insisted his heart was perfectly fine and only wanted a cup of tea that wasn't wet cardboard.'
'Did you make him the tea?'
'I made him the tea. Then I made him the test, and he failed it spectacularly, the way a heart does when it has decided what it wants.' She tapped the napkin where the three spikes met. 'That's what the monitor looked like every time he buzzed the desk to ask about his chart. I took it as a diagnosis.'
The band started up. Daniel, sweating through his grey suit, was pulling his bride onto the dance floor, and Dolores watched them with the narrowed eyes she used on drip rates. She folded the napkin into my palm. 'Keep that. The loop on the end is the bit everyone forgets. The rest is just wiring.'
