Fine line black tattoo of a heart outline with the word yourself written in script inside it, on the inner forearm.

Heart outline with yourself script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line heart outline encloses the lowercase word yourself in flowing cursive script, which runs from the lower left of the heart up towards the right edge. The linework is thin, even and solid black with no shading. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a soft, slightly out-of-focus background, with the photo taken at a close angle.

Brother Edmund had been told the abbot wanted the margin of the psalter left clean, so when the ink ran dry at the end of Lauds he sat with the quill in his teeth and did not know what to do with his hands. The novice, Thomas, was grinding oak galls in the corner and watching him with the bright suspicion of the very young.

"You've written something," Thomas said. "I saw your mouth move."

Edmund blotted the page and turned it so the boy could see. Inside a single thin line he had drawn a heart, and across its lower half ran a word in the looping hand the scriptorium reserved for prayers to be said aloud: yourself. It was not in any psalm. He had been thinking of his sister Alys, who had gone to work in the wool towns and had written him one letter in four years, a letter that said only, be kind to yourself, and then nothing else, as though the rest of the sheet had been too costly to fill.

"That isn't scripture," Thomas said.

"No. It's an instruction. Which is worse, in a house like this."

Thomas laughed before he could stop himself, and Edmund felt the old stiffness in his shoulders ease. He took a fresh sheet, cut it to size, and began again at the top of the page, writing the first line of the psalm slowly so the letters would not wobble. When the bell rang for Prime he left the drawing where it was, unscraped, and went down to chapel with the ink still wet on his thumb.
