Stick-figure girl with handbag tattoo on feet
Other · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows three close views of the same small tattoo on the top of a foot, with a second matching tattoo on the other foot in the first image. The design is a stick-style figure with a blank oval face, dark hair, a patterned dress and a red handbag bearing an S monogram. The outlines are black, with grey shading on the hair and red fill on the bag and dress stripes, set against a dark background.

Dear Jean, I finally went down to the Saturday market on Church Street and came home with the red handbag you kept going on about. The S on the clasp is for Sadie, the stallholder's daughter, who stitched every one herself. She wouldn't take more than four shillings for it, and when I said I could go to four and six she only laughed and said you'd have to come back and tell her what the dance floor looked like first.

So on Saturday we went to the Palais in our spotted dresses, the ones Mam said made us look like a pair of paper dolls cut from the same sheet. The band played the same three numbers they always play, and I spent the whole of the Cha Cha Cha watching the stripes on Sadie's dress swing past the stage. She was sitting at the back with her knitting, and when we passed she held up a ticket stub and a pencil and asked us to draw ourselves on it. Jean, you drew yourself with your arm raised like you were hailing a bus, and I drew myself with my bag hanging off one wrist, and Sadie said that was exactly how we'd both walk home.
You went back to Leeds on the Tuesday and I thought you'd left the stub behind. I found it in the bottom of my handbag this morning, folded in four, with a note in Sadie's careful hand. It says the stick girl is the only one of us who never has to wait for a bus. I have pinned it to the lining, next to the S, and I have decided you can have the bag at Christmas if you come down and dance with me properly this time.
Love, Maureen
