Mrs Pimm had been told the mirror was for the seamstress, but she had never once seen the seamstress use it. Every morning, after the shop bell had gone and the tea had gone cold on the cutting table, the white cat climbed the dresser, sat square in front of the oval glass and considered herself at length. Her whiskers needed a brush. Her left ear sat a fraction lower than the right, which she blamed on the draught from the back door.

The ribbon was the trouble. Mrs Pimm had found it in a basket of offcuts, a length of pink cotton printed with tiny red hearts, and had dragged it up to the mirror in her teeth. Tied under her chin it was perfect. Tied under her chin it made her look like a cat who knew exactly where she was going. Mr Abbott, who came in on Thursdays for his waistcoat fittings, said it was a pity the bow would only last until someone wanted it back.
On Thursday the seamstress unpicked every hem in the shop looking for her scissors, and the ribbon was not in the basket. Mrs Pimm was discovered upstairs, sitting in the middle of the dresser with a heart-printed bow knotted at her throat, staring into the glass. The reflection stared back, lips closed, tail curled, as dignified as anything she had ever seen.
The seamstress laughed, took a photograph, then pinned the ribbon to the frame so it could stop being stolen. Mrs Pimm allowed it. A cat who has been seen properly, she decided, has no further need of a ribbon, though she kept sitting at the mirror every morning in case anybody came in to look.
