Curled pink cat-like creature on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A curled pink cat-like creature with a dark blue eye and a long tail wrapping around its body sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The outline is fine and even, with soft pink shading that gives the body a gentle, rounded form. The creature fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a white strap visible at the edge.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the flour sacks. Hush now, the oven's only just ticking over and the first tray isn't in yet. Before your grandmother's grandmother was kneading in this street, a little pink creature came down the chimney of the Hollis bakery on the coldest night of the year. Nobody saw it arrive. They only found it in the morning, curled on the warm slate beside the proving drawers, its long tail wound round its body twice, like a loop of string somebody had put down and forgotten.

Old Mabel Hollis, who had the ovens then, did not shoo it out. She put a folded sack under it and went back to her scoring. Every morning after that the crust came out a shade rosier, and the children who bought the cob loaves swore they tasted of strawberry jam, though nobody had put jam in them. The creature never ate a crumb. It only watched the dough with one dark blue eye, the way a cat watches a bird it has decided not to catch.

Then came the winter the flour cart stopped coming. Mabel ran the bakery on the last sack and a prayer, and one dawn she found the creature gone from the slate. In its place lay a single curl of pink dough, shaped exactly like the tail, still warm. She baked it. It rose into a crooked little loop, and when the first customer tore a piece off, the whole shop smelled of rain on hot stone.

Mabel sold no bread that day. She set the loaf on the windowsill for the sparrows, and by noon the sun had found it, and the creature had stretched itself out along the frost on the glass, tail loose, leaving the shape of its last loop there until spring.
