Stitched doll face tearing through a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic doll-like face with stitched scars, glowing blue and yellow eyes and a wide toothy grin emerges from torn skin with a red and blue collar visible below. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the face and sharp highlights on the eyes, teeth and stitches. Vivid reds, pinks and blues dominate the colour palette against a dark background, and the design wraps around the forearm.

Dear Win, The big top came down on Tuesday, and I have sold everything except Bartholomew, who cannot be sold, sent on, or shut in the cellar of the Crown without making a fuss. You remember him from Silas's act. Forty years he sat on Silas's knee under the spotlight, with blue glass eyes on one side and yellow on the other, and that grin Silas painted on himself with a fine brush every dawn. Since the funeral, nobody has touched him but me.

The trouble started with the stitches. Silas always said the seams were only cosmetic, that the cloth was a skin for the wood and nothing more. But every night I have sewn the split along his cheek shut with black thread, and every morning it has opened a little further, the pink lining showing through like something alive under a bruise. Last night I left him in the wagon with the lamp lit and went to bed. This morning his right hand was out through the canvas wall, and the red and blue collar had been pulled loose at the throat.
I have not told the men. They would laugh, then want to see him, and I could not bear that grin passed round the fairground for pennies. On the folding table by the door lay a rolled poster from our last season in Harrowgate, Silas bowing beside his boy. Across the bottom, in fresh pencil and a hand very like Silas's, someone had written: We are still on the bill.
I have put him back on his chair with new thread and a clean collar, and I am writing this with him watching me from the corner, grin wide, the two eyes catching the lamp. Tonight I will try the back of the wagon. Tell Mam I am well, and please do not send anyone to fetch me.
